What support services are available for families affected by childhood cancer?

Explore clear and compassionate answers designed to guide families through caregiving, patient support, and coping with loss.

How can I access financial assistance for my child’s treatment?

Families can apply for financial assistance through our support program by reaching out to us directly through our contact page. We focus on helping with costs that are often under‑covered or not covered at all, like counseling, specialized services, and meaningful end‑of‑life or memorial needs.

How can you help with the cost of care and support?

Cancer doesn’t just hit medically—it hits financially, especially when important services aren’t covered by insurance. We help families find and fund things like counseling, therapy, child life services, and other specialized support so you are not forced to choose between what your child needs and what you can afford.

Do you provide counseling yourselves?

We don’t employ in‑house counselors or therapists, and we don’t replace your medical team. Instead, we connect you with trusted professionals and programs, then help with funding when possible so you can access real emotional and mental health support without carrying the full cost alone.

Can someone help me advocate for my child at school or in the hospital?

Yes. We connect families with an advocate who can help you prepare for IEP meetings, request school accommodations, and communicate your child’s needs clearly. We can also support you with patient advocacy—organizing questions, understanding options, and helping you feel less alone in high‑stakes medical conversations.

What support is available for siblings?

Siblings often carry a huge emotional load with very little attention. We offer sibling support through thoughtful activities, experiences, or gifts—especially after a child has died—to help them feel seen, included, and remembered in the way their brother or sister is honored.

Is there support for planning end‑of‑life care and memorials?

When care shifts from curing to comfort, families are often left to figure out impossible decisions with very little guidance. We help identify resources and, when possible, provide funding for end‑of‑life planning, including urns, services, and meaningful memorial projects that reflect who your child is—not just what the default option is.

What if my child isn’t in active treatment anymore?

Whether your child is in treatment, finished with treatment, or no longer receiving medical care, you can still reach out. The needs don’t end when the hospital visits slow down, and we’re here to help with ongoing emotional support, school advocacy, memorial projects, and sibling support as your family keeps living with what you’ve been through.

I don’t know what we need yet. Can I still reach out?

Absolutely. Many families don’t have language for what they need—they just know everything is too much. You can reach out with a simple story of where you are, and we’ll help you name possible supports, identify resources, and explore what Live Like Kingston may be able to help with.
